Director, Global Development, Strategy, Data & Analytics, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Biography

Uyi is Director of Strategy, Data and Analytics (Global Development) at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  His team is responsible for applying big data analytics to generate cross-domain insights for decision making, while also leveraging the foundation's data investment to create global public goods. Uyi has more than 20 years of experience in leading teams to develop and deploy innovative cognitive and artificial intelligence-based technologies that helped solve a wide variety of problems, from the use of big data to combat the Ebola outbreak via behavior change, use of data to re-engineer government processes (ease of doing business in Kenya), to real-time translations and speech systems for under resourced languages and the pioneering of traffic-status applications in Nairobi. Prior to joining the Gates foundation, Uyi previously spent 13 years with IBM Research where he was promoted to Distinguished Engineer (one of the firm's highest technical honors) in 2014, and he was also the Co-Founder and Chief Scientist of IBM Research - Africa from 2012-2016 (the first lab on the continent for conducting applied and far-reaching exploratory research into Africa's grand challenges). Before IBM Research, Uyi held technical leadership positions (1999-2004) with AT&T Labs, Call Sciences and Nuance Communications.  He was also a lecturer at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.  Uyi holds a PhD in Linguistics with specialization in generative syntax and language/speech interfaces from McGill University, a Master of Philosophy from Cambridge and a Bachelor of Arts (first class honors) from the University of Benin, Nigeria.

AI and Data in Service of Philanthropy: Perspectives from Global Development

Description

An overview of some of the approaches by the Global Development Strategy, Data, & Analytics team in using AI for our work at The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation. As a philanthropy whose existence was made possible by the digital revolution, we rely on the transformative power of digital technologies like AI to reduce or eliminate inequities in a limited set of focus areas where we believe significant reduction is possible. Some of these AI approaches include processing of drone, satellite and crowd-sourced imagery for optimal correlations of populations with facilities and people movement to improve quality of care; conducting natural language processing of demand-side and social media data to better understand the communities we serve; employing machine learning to make predictions for better precision targeting as well as the advanced analyses of disparate data sets to model behavior change and to understand how we can better serve the most vulnerable in low income settings, etc. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A.
